  • Shellcracker (redear) and bluegill anglers should fish an ultra-light rod with a number 10 gold hook on the bottom with a wiggler. Stumpknockers (spotted sunfish) and redbreast sunfish can also be caught near stumps and snags with worms or beetlespins. Fishing for largemouth bass will also pickup in mid-March through April as bass begin to spawn. Try fishing backwater areas in 3 to 5 feet of water for spawning bass. Recommended baits for bass include artificial worms, lizards, spinner baits or live shiners.

Dead Lake Description

The Dead Lakes is reported to have been formed when sand bars created by the current of the Apalachicola River blocked the Chipola River. The ensuing high water killed thousands of trees in the floodplain, giving the area its name. The Dead Lakes offers fishing, boating, camping and nature study. Within a short 15 minute drive from Wewahitchka you'll find some of Florida's most pristine beaches including Mexico Beach, St. Joe Beach, and Cape San Blas. As you head down CR386 South from Wewahitchka you'll reach your most important decision as the road dead ends to US Hwy 98. Don't worry, you're already at the beach! To your left you will find St. Joe Beach, Beacon Hill and Cape San Blas, and to your right you'll see Mexico Beach... the choice is yours! This strangely beautiful 6,700-acre lake with dark tannic waters is located on the Chipola River near the town of Wewahitchka. The lake is accessible off SR 71 just north of Wewahitchka on State Park Rd. and south off Land Road. There are fish camps located around the lake. Care should be taken when operating a motor boat in this lake because it is filled with cypress snags and stumps. This lake enjoys a wide reputation for its bluegill (bream) and redear (shellcracker) fishing in the spring.
